Developing a cricket team is far from simple By picking a team name to creating a squad.
What will they be called? What colour will they play ? Whats their badge look like? Who will play with them? And so Forth.
Those were decisions that needed to be made after The Hundred – a brand new 100-ball competition to be performed for the first time next summer – had been conceived.
The contest – finish with team names and kits – was launched this season, when the eight teams at the first sporting draft of the UK will snap up the worlds best players and the squads will be finalised on Sunday.
But how do we got here? BBC Sport looks into the process of building up a team to perform in a competition thats completely different to anything found on a cricket field earlier.
At a major change for cricket in the UK, the brand newest teams are franchises – London, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham, Southampton and Cardiff. Once that was determined, the next step was to assign names and build a new.
The decision to resign from your conventional 18-county format of cricket intended identities had to be made to the groups.
To start with, both the England and Wales Cricket Board commissioned research to every one of the seven towns and the surrounding areas, firstly targeting people – that the age group – and – people aged around 50.
That study gave the ECB a study on each group, pulling out various themes, which were taken forward by a company that was branding.
Southern Brave, the team who will play in Southampton, for example, were appointed after it was discovered men and women in the region had an affinity with the countryside of the region.
Manchesters moniker is that theOriginals, which can be a nod to the towns part in shaping the audio scene of decades gone – from The Hacienda nightclub, the Stone Roses and New Order to Oasis.
Trent Rockets are so called as the River Trent runs throughout all three of the Nottingham-based teams catchment counties – Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire – along with the Invincibles title was given to The Oval-based franchise as a subtle reference Invicta, the motto of Kent – among those counties which will feed into the team.
As it came to designing kits, colors which were associated with local football teams were ruled out, meaning Manchester Originals, as an example, will perform in black – the function in the Industrial Revolution of the city.
The centrepiece of the Manchester strip is that the Originals logo, which signifies a bolt from the towns industrial past, and a beehive – a reference to Manchesters worker bee symbol.
Designers have also produced a new alphabet with letters made from prominent Manchester temples and symbols that will be utilised around the group in advertising and posters.
Elsewhere, Birmingham Phoenix may perform in orange, a color selected as a mix of 2 flags – the West Midlands yellow and the city of Birminghams red and yellow.
Additionally, it integrates the chevrons of this city flag at the design of the top while Premier League-style gold helmets will be worn by Birmingham batsmen, an attempt to appeal to a South Asian crowd – yet another crucial purpose of this Hundred.
But what are staff kits and names with no gamers?
Among the final steps before the tournament starts – itll run at the college holidays from 17 July to 16 August 2020 – is the player draft of Sundays men.
Each group has so far chosen two icons that were local and participant contracted, and the remaining areas will fill up in the squads at a draft in London.
A number of the worlds leading players are offered, including Steve Smith Chris Gayle and Mitchell Starc who have set their book price. Each team will take it in turns to pick with all squads to contain two players in each of the cover brackets: # 100,000 # 125,000, # 75,000, # 60,000, # 50,000, # 40,000 and Number 30,000.
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick will probably likely be in the event on Sunday and has been working with Welsh Fire, alongside head coach Gary Kirsten, to help identify prospective signings.
I feel that the pitches will probably be fairly decent and created for entertaining cricket, the prior Somerset batsman stated.
The cornerstone of it will be like that which T20 cricket appears like already but it is about trying to think fast on your feet.
Trescothick said he anticipates all groups to want amystery spinner, ahigh tech all-rounder,a couple of rather good fast bowlers andgreat high sequence players, with Welsh Fire having already procured Englands Jonny Bairstow, Somersets Tom Banton and Glamorgans Colin Ingram – all of whom perform at the peak of the order.
Welsh Fire will concentrate on areas from Sundays draft with these picks in your mind.
We arent going to go in the draft looking for two openers, Trescothick said. Wed be foolish to.
We will attempt to pick out certain people weve identified that will be in key places from the Hundred.
Theres a difference of opinion on how the championship will play , but with more players that are traditional being predicted by franchise cricket coach Trent Woodhill and skillsets will come to the fore.
I believe this contest will fix the balance between bat and ball, explained Woodhill, a high performance consultant for Your Hundred.
The arrangement lets players bowl 10 balls in a row and that is going to enable bowlers to get on top and stay at the top, therefore batsmen like Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Joe Root will be crucial.
Equally, starting bowlers who swing the ball the likes of David Willey, Mitchell Starc and Mohammad Amir – will be successful.
The job is far from completed post-draft, yet. How can you get 15 players who have never played together buy into making their brand new franchiser and to mold to a group a victory on the pitch?
Oval Invincibles womens head coach Lydia Greenway states thatblank canvas isvery exciting.
I am quite clear on the folks I want involved and the kind of players too, the former England batter stated.
What I hope happens is that all of civilizations are constructed, they are the same for its mens and the girls teams.
Hopefully its not just a womens team consuming a mens group or some mens team feeding off a womens group. Its a joint up approach and you attempt to present yourself in a way that reflects the people that you have involved.
The draft is going to soon be streamed on iPlayer and the BBC Sport site and accompanied with a live text commentary about Sunday.
