Developing a cricket group will be far from straightforward, By picking a team name to building a team.
What are they called? What color will they perform in? What will their badge look like? Wholl play for them? And so on.
Those were decisions which needed to be produced after The Hundred – a brand new competition to be performed for the very first time – had been conceived.
The contest – complete with kits and team names – was launched this month, as soon as the worlds best players will probably likely be snapped up from the eight new teams at the UK important sporting draft along with also the playing squads will be finalised on Sunday.
But how do we got here? BBC Sport looks into the procedure for constructing up a team to play in a competition thats completely different to anything seen in a cricket field before.
The teams are franchises – Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham, Southampton and London. Once that was determined, the next step was to assign titles and build a new brand.
The decision to step away from national crickets standard format meant new identities had to be created for the groups.
To start with, both the England and Wales Cricket Board commissioned research into each of the surrounding regions and the seven cities , firstly targeting individuals aged 16-24 – that the age category that the ECB hopes The Hundred could attract – – those aged up to 50.
That research gave the ECB that a study on every group, pulling out various themes, which were taken forward with a branding company.
Southern Brave, for example were named after it was found individuals within the area had an affinity with the countryside of the region.
The moniker of manchester is that theOriginals, that will be a nod to the citys part in shaping years gone – from The Hacienda nightclub, the Stone Roses and New Order into Oasis audio scene.
Trent Rockets are so called because the River Trent runs through three of the Nottingham-based teams catchment counties – Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire – along with the Invincibles name was provided to The Oval-based franchise since a subtle reference Invicta, the motto of Kent – among the counties which will feed into the team.
As it came to designing kits, colors which were already associated with local soccer teams have been ruled out, significance Manchester Originals, by way of example, will perform in black – the citys part from the Industrial Revolution impacting on the selection of shirt color.
The centrepiece of the Manchester strip is that the Originals hexagon-shaped emblem, which represents a bolt in the citys industrial past, and a beehive – a benchmark to Manchesters employee bee symbol.
Designers have made a new alphabet with letters made from Manchester temples and logos which will be utilised around the group.
Elsewhere, Birmingham Phoenix will play in orange, a colour chosen as a mix of two flags – the West Midlands yellow and the city of Birminghams yellow and red.
In addition, it integrates the chevrons of the town flag in the plan of the top while Indian Premier League-style gold helmets will be worn by Birmingham batsmen, an attempt to appeal to some crowd – yet another aim of The Hundred.
But what are team kits and names without gamers?
One of the final steps before the tournament begins next summer – itll run in the school vacations from 17 July to 16 – is Sundays mens player draft.
Each group has up to now chosen one England red-ball contracted player and two icons, and theyll fill the places in the 15-man squads at a televised draft in London.
A number of the worlds top players are available, such as Steve Smith Chris Gayle and Mitchell Starc that have set their reserve price. Every team takes it in turns to choose all squads to include two players at each of the subsequent cover brackets: # 100,000 # 5 1 125,000, # 75,000, # 60,000, # 50,000, # 40,000 and # 30,000.
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick was operating to help identify potential signings and will likely be at the event on Sunday.
I believe the pitches will probably be pretty decent and made for enjoyable cricket, the prior Somerset batsman stated.
The basis of it will be similar to what T20 cricket looks like already but its about trying to think fast on your feet
Trescothick said he hopes all groups to want apuzzle spinner, ahigh-class all-rounder,a bunch of very good fast bowlers andvery good high order players, with Welsh Fire having already secured Englands Jonny Bairstow, Somersets Tom Banton and Glamorgans Colin Ingram – most of whom perform on top of the order.
Welsh Fire will concentrate on regions in the draft of Sunday, with these selections in mind.
We arent likely to go in the draft searching for 2 openers, Trescothick said. We would be foolish to.
We will attempt to pick out certain people we have identified that is going to be in key positions in the Hundred.
Theres a difference of view on how the tournament will play out, but with more players that are traditional being predicted by experienced franchise cricket coach Trent Woodhill and skillsets will soon come to the fore.
I think this competition will fix the balance between bat and ball, explained Woodhill, a high-performance adviser for The Hundred.
The format lets players bowl 10 balls in a row and that will enable bowlers to get on top and keep on top, so batsmen like Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Joe Root will be crucial.
Equally, starting bowlers who swing the ball the likes of David Willey, Mitchell Starc and Mohammad Amir – will be successful.
The job is far from completed post-draft, yet. How do you get 15 players who have never played with each other to mold into creating their brand fresh franchiser and purchase a success on the pitch?
Oval Invincibles womens head trainer Lydia Greenway states thatblank canvas isvery exciting.
I am very clear on the folks I need included and the type of players also, the former England batter said.
What I hope happens is that whatever cultures are built, theyre the same for the mens and the girls teams.
Hopefully its not just a womens team consuming a mens group or a mens team feeding off a womens team. It is a combined up strategy and you try to introduce yourself in a manner that that reflects the people that you have included.
The draft accompanied with a live text commentary on Sunday by 18:50 BST and will be streamed on iPlayer along with the BBC Sport website.
