Bill O’Brien obtained in certain punting practice at the podium Tuesday afternoon.
The Houston Texans coach repeatedly declined to comment on the firing of general manager Brian Gaine over the weekend after only 17 months on the job. Despite several overtures, O’Brien deferred into the announcement chairman Cal McNair released Friday.
„Again I’ll go back to the statement that Cal (McNair) made,“ O’Brien explained. „I will state it again. He did a thorough test of what goes on in this building to get a day-to-day basis relative to the procedures that are in place in many different areas. Not just coaching, scouting. Every place. Training room, equipment, nutrition, business side. Everything. That’s what I will tell you .“
Asked whether he believed Gaine needed to be fired to move the business forward, O’Brien failed to inform inquiring thoughts.
„I’ll go with the announcement again,“ he explained. „I stand by the statement (Cal McNair) made. Cal made an announcement. He needed to make a decision. He assessed everything and he told me what he wanted me to do to improve and help with his vision of where he sees this business moving or where it wants to go in his opinion.“
Pressed further about whether his relationship with Gaine shifted since the prior GM has been hired in Jan. 2018, O’Brien again passed.
„Again, I will say like I mentioned before is that before, at the statement that Cal created, Cal made an evaluation, a comprehensive evaluation and this really is the decision that has been made and that is what I will say about that,“ he explained.
While O’Brien failed to provide any background to his relationship with the former GM and also his function in the hiring of their next GM or offer anything of interest or substance, he wanted it understood it was McNair’s decision and that his occupation was also part of the evaluation procedure.
„I think anytime you get information like that, immediately, it’s a tough decision for Cal to make,“ O’Brien said of the firing. „But he was very clear with me with what he desired me to do to enhance and his vision to the soccer team along with his vision to the company and that is what we’re doing now. We’re moving ahead. We are excited about the future.“
That future will comprise O’Brien along with a new GM.
